🧠 What is stress?
Stress is a natural response of the body to a situation perceived as demanding or threatening. It can be physical, psychological, social, or spiritual. When a basic need isn’t met, it creates imbalance, tension, and frustration (from the “Guide d’autosoins pour la gestion du stress” – Gérard Lebel).
🧭 Absolute vs. relative stress
- Absolute stress: universal, it makes us flee real danger (e.g., a threatening bear 🐻).
- Relative stress: subjective, it depends on how we perceive a situation (e.g., being late, work overload).
😰 What is anxiety?
Anxiety is an emotional response to a future or uncertain threat. It can help us prepare, but becomes problematic when it’s excessive, persistent, or overwhelming.
Common signs include:
- 💭 Rumination, negative thoughts
- ❤️ Heart palpitations, muscle tension
- 😵💫 Trouble focusing
- 😴 Sleep disturbances
🔍 How to recognize a stressful situation?
According to the Centre for Studies on Human Stress, a situation is stressful if it includes one or more of the following:
- Low control
- Unpredictability
- Novelty
- Ego threat
The more elements are present, the more stressful the situation becomes!
