About addiction: what you need to know
University life brings freedom, new experiences, and social events. But it can also come with challenges — including risky behaviors and addictions that may affect your health, well-being, and academic success.
Whether it’s alcohol, cannabis, screens, or other habits, it’s important to stay informed, recognize the signs, and know where to find support — without judgment.
🔍 Recognizing the signs
Addictions can involve substances (alcohol, drugs, tobacco) or behaviors (gambling, excessive screen use, disordered eating, self-medication). Warning signs include:
- Loss of control over behavior
- Social withdrawal
- Mood swings, anxiety, irritability
- Academic difficulties
- Risky behaviors (e.g. driving under influence, unsafe sex)
- Needing substances to relax, sleep, or socialize
- Missing classes or deadlines due to use
- Feeling anxious or low when not using
- Concern from friends or family
If any of this sound familiar, it might be time to check in with yourself — or talk to someone.
