Do not wait until the last moment to take the necessary steps. Respect this deadline you may have to pay some fees if you apply too late. We strongly advice you to put an alert on your phone calendar.
What is your current situation?
I need to renew my student permit, I’m still studying.
The conditions of having your residence permit renewed are the same as those that apply to a first-time application, namely:
- be enrolled in a French institution of higher education.
- receive monthly resources of at least 615 euros.
In the case of renewal applications, you will also need to demonstrate the serious nature of your studies in France (attendance, exam results, diplomas obtained, etc.). Repeating a year does not in itself bring into question the serious nature of your studies.
You will have to show your school certificate to justify that you’re still studying.
It’s an online procedure. Check the process :

The conditions are the same than above. However, you will have to justify that your studies ended and that you’re waiting for your jury. You will have to use an end-of-studies certificate instead of your school certificate.

I need to renew my resident permit. I’m already awarded!
If you are a foreigner who has graduated from a French institution and wish to work in France after completing your higher education, you can apply for a resident permit for job search or business creation, which is valid for one year. It allows you to stay in France to complete your education with a first professional experience or to create a company in a field corresponding to your education.
Please note that to be eligible for this residence permit, you must prove that you have a certain level of education.
You are concerned if you are (or have been) in France with a student residence permit and have obtained a Specialised Master's degree, a Master of Science, or another degree at least equivalent to a master’s degree.
Please note that you must make your application in the prefecture of your place of residence. An application in Rennes requires that you live in Ille-et-Vilaine (35).
The registration to the CPAM is mandatory for this process.
🏠 If you apply in Rennes, you can contact the Welcome Office to know more about the process.
🏠 If you’re not living in Rennes, you have to go on your prefecture website to get more information. The process can be different from a prefecture to another one.

✈ If you are no longer in France and your resident permit has expired
After graduation, you have 5 years to apply for a work permit (APS). If you no longer hold a valid student residence permit because you have returned home, you must contact your country’s French embassy to apply for a "Job Search/Business Creation" visa.
⚠ It must be validated within 3 months of your arrival in France. ⚠
How to avoid issues with the prefecture?
☑ Know your resident permit expiry date.
☑ Have your documents ready a few weeks before the application.
☑ When you apply, you need to have a valid email AND a valid French phone number. The prefecture will contact you through text, so be sure to have a valid one so you won’t miss any appointment!
☑ Check your ANEF account regularly! The prefecture may ask for more documents and may send you some documents through your account. You won’t always receive a notification.
