Dear future MSc International Management student,
We are delighted to welcome you on board in January for the start of your Master of Science studies at Rennes School of Business. During your time with us you will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge, skills and abilities in preparation for your future career. Your programme will be demanding yet this ensures that your future qualification has genuine academic and professional value.
This introductory communication is designed to share preliminary information with you concerning the academic year ahead. You will also be provided with a Student Handbook which will be available via your student interface [WebRise: my students documents’ / ‘Useful documents’]. The Student Handbook presents the academic requirements and rules for your MSc programme. This will be your main reference document throughout your studies.
Let us look at 7 of the most frequently asked questions which MSc students have!
1- What is the teaching and learning process?
We put an emphasis on teamwork in our teaching and learning process. As you can imagine forming an efficient and effective team is not an automatic process and it will require you to be tolerant, open to others and committed to achieving the intended learning outcomes [ILOs] set by your professors.
For each module continuous assessments will take place during the semesters and a final assessment will be set for each module at the end of each semester. Continuous assessments may take the form of a report, case study analysis or a group project. Final assessments are usually an individual exam but can also be an individual report or project. One important point to note is that in our assessment process at Rennes School of Business we attach great importance to academic integrity. Please make sure that you read our Academic Integrity Policy in your Student Handbook.
2- What are our expectations?
To make sure you gain full benefit from your programme, we ask you to be fully committed right from day one. Being fully committed means that you should take an active role in class and prepare the work set by your professors. We would also like to reinforce the respectful attitude we wish you to adopt such as being on time for classes and in your communication with your professors, the administrative staff, and your peers.
For an optimal learning process you are required to have a fully functioning laptop. You should also have business attire for presentations, for corporate life [internships, work-study], and for professional events [Corporate Days, Alumni Days, …].
During the Academic Year we will communicate with you via email and via Mailchimp. Please make sure that you do not unsubscribe from Mailchimp! If you unsubscribe, you will no longer receive information from us about specific programme-related information and events.
3- When does the Academic Year begin?
Please refer to the schedule (here) for information about the date of your Onboarding Seminar. The objective of this seminar is for you to meet your Programme Director, and the administrative team who will be your main contacts during your studies. You will also familiarise yourself with the campus and surrounding areas. The seminar is an obligatory part of your academic year so please make sure you take part in each events.
You will be able to consult the General Calendar via your WebRise [My students documents / Useful documents / General Calendar]. This will list the important dates concerning the Academic Year ahead.
4- How are the semesters organised?
The pace of study is intense.
As a Full-time Masters student you may have classes from 8.20 am to 6.10 pm, sometimes later, from Monday to Friday. Some classes are also held on Saturdays. We do our best not to change your schedule from one week to the next. However, dates and times of modules may be changed according to the availabilities of our permanent and adjunct faculty members, who may also hold business functions in industry. Please do not book trips and visits during the semester and until the Final Examination period is complete. Being absent from a class because you are on a trip does not constitute a valid excuse in our school policy. Your schedule will be available at the beginning of January once you are fully registered (online administrative registration).
In addition to the hours of scheduled classes, time needs to be planned for personal work and research (to be completed before and after classes). It is vital that you plan your tasks to meet the required deadlines given by your professors.
Note: You have free access with your student card to the Rennes campus according to the opening hours. The school declines any liability for students when they are outside the school, except in the case of activities requested by faculty as part of the learning content of the programme.
5- What are the rules of attendance in class?
Presence in class is mandatory from the beginning of the semester (including the Onboarding Seminar as already presented). As in the company context in France, an absence must be explained by uploading the appropriate document (i.e. medical certificate) within 48 hours via your WebRise. Please refer to your Student Handbook and/or Education Assistant for more detailed information.
6- What are the additional learning resources?
Apart from the exchanges you will have with your professors and Programme Director, we have additional learning resources available to you via the Learning Centre [on-site and on-line] and via the Career Department [via JobTeaser]. You have free access to these resources via the internet on a 24/7 basis. Please note that the Rennes School of Business Wi-Fi must be used for educational purposes only.
7- How can I further contribute to my academic experience?
You may also wish to run for the position of Student Representative for your programme or Student Ambassador for the school. These are excellent ways to develop your communication, presentation and team-building skills.
