To apply, connect to CAF
As a start, you will need to prepare documents such as the housing agreement, French bank account details (called RIB), passport first page, certificate of studies and copy of your visa.
Please note the following rules:
- If you have a VISA “D” with mention “dispense temporaire de titre de séjour”, you are not eligible for the allowance.
- If you move from one accommodation to another, you will have to close your account in CAF and start a new application.
- You must inform CAF when you leave your accommodation. If you do not, you may have to reimburse them.
- A bank account in France is mandatory. CAF will not process bank transfers outside of France.

Can I apply if I don't have my social security number?
You can submit your application online without having a social security number.
Begin by submitting your application for housing benefit at caf.fr. You can then create an account. A temporary username will be given to you so you can continue your application online (the temporary username will be composed of the letter P and 8 figures). This username will allow you to log in to the My Account space.
After the CAF has processed your application, it will assign you a temporary social security number. This will allow you to log in to your My Account space for all your tasks, to track the progress of your applications and your payments, etc.
To facilitate the processing of your application, please send the CAF an identity document (identity card or passport) and a civil status document (birth certificate, translated into French by a certified translator). It’s better to get the certified translation of your birth certificate before coming to France. Please check the procedure here.
For information, the process tends to be faster if you apply with your social security number.
